The Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies at Columbia University notes with deep sadness the passing of our former colleague, Professor David Weiss Halivni, (1927-2022), a colossus of Talmudic scholarship, a revered teacher and mentor, and a remarkable human being. Professor Halivni's long association with Columbia began with an adjunct professorship from 1961-1984, followed by his holding of the Littauer Chair in Talmud and Advanced Rabbinics in the Department of Religion from 1985-2005.
