Dr. Ruth Raphaeli-Slivko is senior lecturer and coordinator of the Hebrew Language Program at the Department of Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures (MEALAC). She received her doctoral degree in curriculum and teaching from Teachers College in 1981. Dr. Raphaeli-Slivko has written, produced, and presented numerous dramatized, educational radio shows on Hebrew, Jewish history, and music appreciation for both the Office of Education and the Broadcasting Authority in Israel. One series for Hebrew instruction, sponsored by the World Zionist Organization and the Tarbut Foundation, was broadcast on WEVD 1050 News Talk Radio in New York. Dr. Raphaeli-Slivko is coauthor of a series of five textbooks and student workbooks for teaching biblical Hebrew, which were commissioned by the Melton Research Center for Jewish Education at the Jewish Theological Seminary, and the author of a textbook for teaching reading comprehension in modern Hebrew. She also wrote and produced two self-teaching kits for Hebrew instruction. She recently created a series of ten audio Web casts for her students on topics from ancient Jewish history to the history of modern Israel, all of which are available on the MEALAC Web site. Dr. Raphaeli-Slivko has published academic articles, presented conference papers, and conducted teacher workshops on the teaching of modern and biblical Hebrew. She is often consulted on issues of Hebrew language, Hebrew instruction, and translation by various publishers and organizations.
